Why Upgrade

Why Level 2 Changes Everything.

The standard outlet that comes with every EV is a Level 1 charger. It adds about 4 miles of range per hour — meaning a typical overnight charge might only get you 40 miles. That's fine until it isn't.

A Level 2 charger runs on 240V, the same circuit as your dryer. It adds 20–30 miles per hour, so your car wakes up every morning with a full charge — no matter how far you drove the day before.

And when it's powered by your SolarAbility solar system? That charge costs you exactly nothing.

Better Together

Pair With Solar &
Charge for Free.

An EV charger and a solar system are a natural match. Your panels generate power during the day, store it or feed the grid, and your car charges on that clean energy at night. The average Illinois driver saves $1,200–$1,800 per year in fuel costs alone.

FAQ

EV Charger Questions

What does EV charger installation cost in Illinois?
Level 2 EV charger installation in Illinois typically starts at $900 and goes up depending on the distance of the conduit run, panel capacity, and the charger brand. SolarAbility provides free on-site assessments with transparent pricing before any work begins.
Does my panel need to be upgraded first?
Most homes don't need a panel upgrade for a single EV charger. We'll assess your panel's available capacity during the free site visit. If an upgrade is needed, we'll tell you upfront — no surprises.
Which EV charger brands does SolarAbility install?
We install all major brands including Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint, Emporia, Grizzl-E, Ford Charge Station Pro, and JuiceBox. We can also install the charger provided by your vehicle manufacturer.
What EV vehicles does Level 2 work with?
All of them. Tesla, Rivian, Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevy Silverado EV, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, Polestar — every modern EV uses the same J1772 or CCS standard that Level 2 chargers support. Tesla vehicles come with an adapter.
Can I pair an EV charger with my solar panels?
Yes — pairing an EV charger with solar is one of the smartest upgrades an Illinois homeowner can make. You can charge your vehicle on clean energy you produce, effectively driving on sunshine at near-zero fuel cost.
How long does installation take?
Typically half a day to a full day. We'll run a 240V circuit from your panel to your garage or parking area, mount the charger, and test everything. You'll typically be charging within the week.
Do I need a permit?
Yes — an EV charger installation requires an electrical permit in most Illinois municipalities. We handle the entire permit process. It's included in your quote — no extra hassle for you.
Is there a federal tax credit for EV chargers?
The federal EV charger tax credit (Section 30C) is available through June 30, 2026 — but only for installations in eligible low-income or non-urban census tracts. If you qualify, it covers up to 30% of installation cost, capped at $1,000. Ask us when you get your quote and we'll check eligibility for your address.
